Planting new Saplings

Early on Tuesday morning, disregarding atrocious weather conditions, a hardy group of volunteers assembled at the club to undertake the planting of additional saplings on the newly redesigned holes in particular Holes 1; 2; & 5.

Working together with the DBD Team of Ronan Branigan, Barry Kavanagh, Tom, Alan and Shane; this combined group planted well in excess of 100 saplings on the day.

Even more remarkably all these saplings were found on the course itself from seedlings produced by existing trees. The best of these were identified and then lifted by Barry and his team using the mini digger.

On Tuesday holes were drilled – started with a power auger – and then manually enlarged with spade, shovel and crowbar as required. The saplings planted ranged in height from 1m to 3m. Following relocation these saplings will require a period of time to re-establish themselves and certainly cannot be expected to thrive immediately. Much will of course depend on the weather and a number, inevitably, will fail.

In addition a small number of larger ornamental saplings were planted – more information to follow.

More work along these lines will be planned in the coming months and able bodied volunteers are always welcome. The entry IQ test is not considered overly onerous. If you are interested in helping with this or any other course projects please inform Mick Reidy or myself.

The volunteers on Tuesday were Martin Farrell, Tony Redmond, Brendan Ward, Brian Purcell, Pat Murtagh and Mick Reidy. Several other stalwarts were unable to make it on that particular day.

Thank you all for your time and assistance

Ronan Kelly
